Designersupport offers a set of add-ons to customize Illustrator so you can save as much time as possible. Part of this includes two brush libraries called 'DS Brushes' and 'ds-knit-brushes'. We have been offering these libraries to stylists for years. Therefore, we know from experience that they are appreciated. In this tutorial, we will show the brushes and what you can do with them.
This brush works in conjunction with the 'Brush' tool.

Padded stitch is intended to indicate the stitching seams of quilted clothing. A bit confusing is that at the top of the DS Brushes, there's the 'Padded stitch art brush' and at the bottom, the 'Padded stitch pattern brush'. The difference is that the art brush stretches along the entire line, and the pattern brush repeats itself. In some cases, one fits better than the other. It's a matter of trying out. Why do both have two versions? That's to keep a bit of variation in the drawing.
These are the most used pattern brushes for clothing designers.
A Bartack is used to indicate a stitching reinforcement with a short line, for example at the starting points of pockets or as a reinforcing stitch at the fly insertion (see trousers below).
The Chainstitch is a chain stitch. The Flatlock is a finishing stitch, and the two zigzag stitches serve multiple purposes.
Every zipper you see here marked as 'Closed' is also offered as a single open zipper line. There are four types of zippers to be found in the DS Brushes. The Zipper Closed is a zipper with a black outline. The fill color of the zipper figure is the color of the line color in Illustrator. The zipper Silver and Copper-Gold have a gradient, drawn in such a way that it is accepted by the brushes window. These cannot be changed in color. The 'Color Editable Zipper' is actually the first zipper I ever made and can be seen as a block zipper. This zipper's color can also be changed by adjusting the line color in Illustrator.
Herringbone, also known as 'Fishbone' tape, is used for various purposes. For example, to finish the inside of a seam or as decoration on artwork (see below). Like many other brushes, the brush is offered in two directions.
This irregular stitch zigzag is primarily used by me as a finishing touch for an appliquéd artwork, also known as a 'Patch'.
In fully fashioned knitting, the parts of the garment - such as sleeves, collar, and body - are knitted directly into the desired shape. This means that any "seams" you see or feel are actually part of the knitting process itself and are created by adjusting the number of stitches. This means that a fully fashioned seamline is more a part of the structure of the knitwear than a seam in the traditional sense of the word, where pieces of fabric are sewn together. This brush illustrates the fully fashioned seamline. It is offered as both a double and a single in two directions in the DS Brushes.
This type of stitching is often seen as a 'top stitch' in types of clothing where you want to deliberately add a certain playful irregularity, such as in children's clothing.
A simple piece of cable. More complex versions can be found in the knit brushes. This one, for example, can be used for a hang tag cord.
These pleats are used, for example, with an elastic waistband.
A Picot is a finishing tape that you often see on lingerie, for example.
When designing shoes (which I have done for various brands at Aktie Sport, Perry Sport, and for 'Protest'), you face the challenge of wanting to create the outline of your shoe sole in one line but then include the sole profile at the bottom. You want this so you can color in the shoe sole, including the sole profile. That's why I've created a pattern brush that you can use as a sole profile, which you can then adjust so that it can be fixed as a single outline of the shoe sole. In this tutorial, you'll learn how to do that.

The 'fancy stitching' brush is used to represent a thicker stitch. I often use it on artworks to indicate that something is stitched on. But I also use it to represent multiple yarns in a drawing.
Below is an example of indicating a thick or multiple yarn.
This brush can also be changed in color by adjusting the line color.
Below, I use the brush to indicate that it concerns an appliquéd artwork. The material used for the artwork could, for example, be felt or twill.
The ruffles are an easy way to quickly draw ruffles, often used in children's clothing, for example. When you choose the ruffle, it first appears entirely black because the line color is set to black by default. And here too, you need to adjust the line color, and then you will see the color change in the ruffles.
There is an A and a B version depending on which direction the ruffles are going.
Did you know that you actually only need one? You can change the direction of a path in Illustrator by going to 'Object > Path > Reverse Path Direction'.
We now offer an extensive 'Knits' Brushes library. However, this cable was already included as a basic option in the DS Brushes and can be used to indicate a cable in a knit. With this brush too, you need to set the line color; otherwise, the cable will remain entirely black.
Earlier, you might have seen the rope used as a cord for a hang tag. Naturally, this can also be done with this colorable rope brush. You can also use it in a knit, or how about along the edge of woven slippers?
The sequin is used in children's clothing but also in adult clothing, both as fabric and incorporated into artwork.

Padded stitch is bedoeld om de stikselnaden van gewatteerde kleding aan te geven. Een beetje verwarrend is dat bovenaan de DS Brushes de 'Padded stitch art brush' staat en onderaan de 'Padded stitch pattern brush'. Het verschil is dat de art brush zich uitrekt langs de hele lijn en de pattern brush zich herhaald. In sommige gevallen past de ene beter dan de ander. Kwestie van uitproberen. Waarom hebben beide twee versies? Dat is om een beetje variatie in de tekening te houden.
Dit zijn de meeste gebruikte pattern brushes voor kleding tekenaars.
Een Bartack gebruik je om d.m.v. een kort lijntje een stiksel versteviging aan te geven. Bij aanzetpunten van zakken bijvoorbeeld. Of als versteviging stiksel bij de gulp inzet (zie pantalon hier onder).
De Chainstitch is een kettingsteek. De Flatlock is een afwerking stiksel en de beide zig zag stiksels dienenen meerdere doeleinden.
Elke zipper die je hier 'Closed' ziet staan wordt ook als enkele open zipper lijn aangeboden. Er zijn vier soorten zippers in de DS Brushes te vinden. De Zipper Closed is een zipper met een zwarte outline. De vulkleur van het rits figuurtje is de kleur van de lijnkleur in Illustrator. De zipper Silver en Copper-Gold zijn een verloopje, zodanig getekend dat het wordt geaccepteerd door het penselen venster. Deze kan je niet van kleur veranderen. De 'Color Editable Zipper' is eigenlijk de eerste rits die ik ooit gemaakt heb en kan je zien als een blokrits. Ook deze rits kan je van kleur veranderen door in Illustrator de lijnkleur aan te passen.
Herringbone ofwel 'Visgraat' band wordt voor verschillende doeleinden gebruikt. Bijvoorbeeld om de binnenkant van een naad af te werken of als versiering op een artwork (zie hier onder). De penseel wordt net als vele andere penselen in twee richtingen aangeboden.
Deze onregelmatige stiksel zigzag gebruik ik voornamelijk als afwerking voor een opgestikt artwork. Ook wel een 'Patch' genoemd.
Bij fully fashioned breien worden de onderdelen van het kledingstuk - zoals mouwen, kraag, en lijf - direct in de gewenste vorm gebreid. Dit houdt in dat eventuele "naden" die je ziet of voelt, eigenlijk deel uitmaken van het breiproces zelf en zijn gecreëerd door het aantal steken aan te passen. Dit betekent dat een fully fashion seamline eerder een onderdeel is van de structuur van het breiwerk dan een naad in de traditionele zin van het woord, waar stukken stof aan elkaar genaaid worden. Dit penseel illustreert de fully fashion seamline. Het wordt als een dubbele en een enkele in twee richtingen in de DS Brushes aangeboden.
Dit type stiksel zie je vaak als 'top stitch' bij typen kleding waar je bewust een bepaalde speelse onregelmatigheid aan wilt brengen. Zoals bij kinderkleding.
Een eenvoudig stukje kabel. Complexere versie zijn te vinden in de knit brushes. Deze is bijvoorbeeld te gebruiken voor een hanglabel koordje.
Deze plooien gebruik je bij een elastieken tailleband bijvoorbeeld.
Een Picot is een afwerk bandje wat je bijvoorbeeld vaak ziet op lingerie.
Wanneer je schoenen ontwerpt (wat ik voor diverse merken van Aktie Sport en Perry Sport en voor 'Protest' heb gedaan), dan loop je tegen de uitdaging aan dat je de omtrek van je schoenzool in één lijn wilt maken maar dan onderaan wel met de zool profiel er in. Je wilt dat zodat je de schoonzool in kan kleuren, inclusief de zool profiel. Daarom heb ik een patroonpenseel gemaakt die je kan gebruiken als zool profiel die je daarna zodanig kan aanpassen dat het vast te maken is als één omtreklijn van de schoenzool. In deze tutorial leer je hoe je dat doet.

De 'fancy stitching' penseel is om een wat dikker stiksel weer te geven. Dat gebruik ik vaak op artworks om aan te geven dat iets is opgestikt. Maar ik gebruik het ook om bijvoorbeeld meervoudige garen aan te geven in een tekening.
Hier onder zie je een voorbeeld van het aangeven van een dik of meervoudig garen.
Óók dit penseel verander je van kleur door de lijnkleur aan te passen.
Hier onder gebruik ik de penseel om aan te geven dat het om een opgestikt artwork gaat. Het materiaal wat je voor het artwork gebruikt zou bijvoorbeeld vilt of twill kunnen zijn.
De ruffles zijn een makkelijke manier om snel ruffles te tekenen. Veel gebruikt bij kinderkleding bijvoorbeeld. Wanneer je de ruffle kiest, dan is die eerst helemaal zwart omdat de lijnkleur standaard om zwart staat. En ook hier dien je de lijnkleur aan te passen en dan zie je de kleur veranderen in de ruffles.
Er is een A en een B versie afhankelijk welke kant de ruffles op gaan.
Wist je dat je eigenlijk maar één nodig hebt? Je kan namelijk de richting van een pad in Illustrator wijzigen. Dat doe je door te gaan naar 'Object > Pad > Padrichting omdraaien'.
Inmiddels bieden wij een uitgebreide 'Knits' Brushes bibliotheek aan. Maar deze kabel zat al als basis in de DS Brushes en kan je gebruiken om een kabel in een knit aan te geven. Ook bij dit penseel dien je de lijnkleur in te stellen anders blijft de kabel helemaal zwart.
Eerder zal je de rope al voorbij komen als koordje bij een hanglabel. Dat kan dan natuurlijk ook met deze kleurbare rope penseel. Je kan het ook in een knit gebruiken of wat dacht je langs de rand van rieten slippers.
De sequence wordt gebruikt op kinderkleding maar ook in volwassenen kleding. Zowel als stof als verwerkt in een artwork.
