From webshop to AI Assistant

People will shop online without seeing the site

In March 2026 I wrote this article with the insight that in the near future, most online shopping will happen through the AI platforms I still refer to in the article as the well-known AI chats. Now, a few months later, Meta, OpenAI and Google have taken their first steps with apps presenting themselves as AI assistants called Muse and Dots, while Google is still trying to make it happen within the Gemini app itself.

A number of major AI players – such as Google AI, OpenAI and Perplexity – are now fighting for the position of the new "shopping browser", where shopping happens inside the AI chat instead of via standalone webshops. AI shopping shifts the moment of purchase into conversations within these chats: you describe your need, the agent searches, compares and checks out, while protocols like Google's and Shopify's Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) allow different agents to talk to webshops directly and handle transactions. Because these systems do not just look at who spends the most money on advertising, but at how relevant a brand is, what customers say about it and how trustworthy it comes across, smaller and medium-sized brands get a fair chance again. Previously, they were often shouted down by the big boys with deep pockets. Unfortunately, Europe does not yet have its own technical commerce protocol as an alternative to UCP; here it is mainly frameworks like the EU AI Act and existing payment and privacy rules that determine how agentic commerce is allowed to work, while the actual rails are currently being laid mostly by American and global players (European developers: wake-up call!).

For medium-sized fashion companies, agentic shopping does not mean you have to build complex AI agents yourself, but that your brand and shop must be "agent-ready": connected to platforms that support such protocols, with well-structured product data, rich imagery and longer, substantive PDP texts that AI can easily read. Storytelling is crucial here because models look for clear, consistent narratives and authentic signals – a sharp brand POV, a coherent tone of voice and genuine customer reviews – to decide who to recommend instead of whoever advertises the loudest. In practice, it now comes down to three questions for a fashion company:

  • how do I make sure AI chats truly understand my collection and brand story,
  • how do I build and manage strong review and service signals,
  • and through which existing AI and e-commerce platforms do I technically plug my brand into this new agentic shopping world without having to develop a full AI stack myself.

What to do

  • Make sure your webshop runs on a platform that supports AI shopping protocols such as UCP or similar "agentic commerce" connections (Shopify-like infrastructure).
  • Write longer, substantive product pages with use cases, FAQs and clear fit/feel information so that AI models have rich text to "read".
  • Invest in high-quality, varied product images (full body, details, material, styling options) that are easy to analyse multimodally.
  • Actively build genuine customer reviews (follow-up emails, incentives, UGC), because ratings and reviews are core signals for both shoppers and AI models.
  • Define a sharp, consistent brand POV and make sure it comes through in copy, campaigns and social – coherent narratives get picked up sooner than "loud" promotions.
  • Optimise your site for AIO: a clear category structure, internal links, clear product names and tags, so that AI search can logically map your offering.
  • Raise your service level (clear return policy, quick responses, good after-sales) so that a positive, trustworthy image appears everywhere online for AI to "crawl".
  • Experiment early with AI shopping integrations from parties such as Google AI Mode, Shopify Agentic Storefronts or similar tools, instead of waiting it out.

What NOT to do

  • Don't keep optimising only for classic performance ads (SEA/social) and pouring your entire budget into them; in a merit-based agentic environment, quality and relevance weigh more heavily than media spend.
  • Don't use super-short, empty product texts and a single catalogue photo per item; that gives AI barely any content to understand or recommend your brand.
  • Don't try to rebuild every new AI tool yourself; as a medium-sized fashion brand, it is smarter to hook into existing protocols and platform partners than to develop your own agent stack.
  • Don't keep switching tone of voice and brand story per campaign; inconsistent storytelling makes it harder for models to recognise your identity.
  • Don't ignore your reviews or try to "manage" them with fake feedback; generative systems rely on authentic signals, and inconsistent or fake traces undermine trust.
  • Don't dismiss agentic AI as a "temporary hype"; major players like Google, OpenAI, Perplexity and Shopify are now building the new shopping rails with it, and in the long run you won't be able to get around it.

VAN WEBSHOP NAAR AI ASSISTENT

Maart 2026
